Around the World on a Folk Tale
More children in Grant County will have the opportunity to enjoy storyteller and musician Leticia Pizzino as LLL and the Rotary Club will sponsor two additional performances of this energetic entertainer brought to Silver City by the Summer Reading Program of the Public Library. The 10 o’clock morning performance at the library will be followed by a different afternoon program at the First United Methodist Church at 1 pm and in Santa Clara at 3 pm. Help us spread the word! We will be offering free books and a treat at the performances we sponsor. If you are available to help with this outreach, please contact the LLL office.

Increased Competition for Video Games, TV time, and “I’m Bored!” Let’s R.E.A.D. 2009-2010 13,254 books were received from three First Book distributions during this school year. Those books incurred $4,638.90 in shipping cost that was funded by grants from McCune Charitable Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Silver City Rotary Club. Since December, close to eleven thousand books have been given to about 4,000 children: in ten daycares; at many schools - Stout, Sixth Street, Harrison Schmidt, Jose Barrios, Cliff, Santa Clara, Bayard, San Lorenzo, Columbus, Lordsburg, La Plata, Snell, Agape school, Calvary Christian Academy, Head Start; to families in the First Born Program; to children and families with the WIC program; at twenty-two churches; in Hurley at the town’s 100th Anniversary celebration; and to participants in the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparents programs. Many thanks to the twenty-seven LLL volunteers who helped distribute these books. Caroline Baldwin, Project Chair

LLL Program News and Notes
Board of Directors Welcomes New Members
The board of Directors of Literacy Link – Leamos welcomes Gerry Ullery to its table. Gerry has been active as a volunteer for numerous years, helping people increase their computer and keyboarding skills. He has also helped at many different community outreaches and Love Your Library Days. Lani Dombrowski, a very experienced tutor and a regular reader to the children in three classrooms at El Grito Head Start, has also joined the LLL board of directors. Her practical wisdom is treasured by all.
LLL board member Karen Bryan has been elected to serve on the board of Directors of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. She will be a great spokesperson for the southwest area of the state.
Other board members include current Pres. Caroline Baldwin, Treas/ Frank Ferrara, Marilyn Berry, Gloria Bradford, Thelma Sordyl, Rees Madsen, Chrissie Souders, Barry Remmel, Linda Ferrara and Michelle Detterick. We appreciate the time and hard work that each one gives to increase local literacy levels.
Another Resource The Public Library has acquired the online service of tutor.com. Go to library from the site of www.townofsilvercity.org When prompted enter your library card number with the prefix P. There is a lot of information there. Cool, yes?

School bells Ring In Summer
The cold weather did not give up its grip easily on us this year but as the days of May fly by, school comes to an end. We appreciate the many hours spent by LLL readers preparing and reading to all ten classrooms of El Grito Head Start throughout the 2009-2010 school year. This year’s readers have included chair Barb Nelson, Cheryl Leidich, Bruce McKinney, Lani Dombrowski, Darian Shaw, Karen Bryan, Natalia Holguin, and Marcia Andre.
While subbing for a reader in Santa Clara and surrounded by curious eyes, listening ears, and a few “bubbled” mouths (not talking), I know the value, and challenges, of our volunteers. Thank you, Readers!
Independence Day Salute
Literacy Link – Leamos volunteers will once again be a part of the maze of people following the parade at Gough Park on July 3rd. We will have program information, books, and key ring flashlights to give away. All you need is a smile and a willingness to tell folks about the tutoring of LLL. Call the office to volunteer. It is lots of fun!

Coordinator’s Column
After recovering from singing and marching in circles with some 4 year old Head Start students following the reading of a story by one of our ESL learners, I thought “How do you really convey to others what literacy is all about?” I knew we were experiencing the streaming of resources that have come together in the last 9 years, providing strength for LLL and having a strong impact on our community. Our LLL learners, volunteers, community partners, and our financial supporters have streamed into a mighty Rio R.E.A.D.! Enjoy the River today!
Ruben’s Jungle is a bilingual story of a young boy who experiences the jungle in his dreams and then carries that knowledge— and the animals— in his magic cap. As we marched and sang our way to the zoo, I saw Rio R.E.A.D. in swinging elephant trunks and monkey noises. Direct from our learners: “we are having a ball” and “we are learning what we want to know,!” from the computer class. “Hello readers I’m Natalia Holguin, I’m from Mexico, and now I’m living here in silver city and the Literacy Link- Leamos program helped me a lot with my English, I go to class Mondays and Thursdays and I have a tutor, she helps me a lot with all my doubts, homework and to improve my speaking. Every class you learn a lot of new things that you can’t learn watching TV or in the computer doing nothing. For me this program brings me to a lot of benefits, I met people in the same situation, I made new friend, a lot of different cultures, I’m very happy with this program.” I hear the rushing waters of Rio R.E.A.D. in those voices! With thanks, Michelle
