Summer’s Here

With school bells ringing in summer, it is time to think about several activities we have coming up including June’s in-service, Tutoring 101. This workshop will help new tutors be prepared for the challenges and the rewards of being a volunteer tutor. Experienced tutors will get lots of ideas to incorporate in their lesson plans and be encouraged to evaluate the growth and progress of their tutoring skills The training will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 10 to 12 at the conference room of First New Mexico Bank. Please plan to attend and call the LLL office to register soon! After the Summer Reading Program concludes we will be back in the library for ESL training on July 14 from 10 am to 12 noon. Watch for more details after July 1st….but mark your calendars now!

Our literacy outreach at Gough Park during the Fourth of July celebration will set up at 8 am and run until the books are gone, the crowds have thinned, and our rainy season has begun with an afternoon shower, or 2 pm, whatever happens first.  Thelma Sordyl will be chairing this event. This is always a great opportunity to spread the word about our program as most of Grant County will be there. If you have gently used paperbacks this is a great chance to simplify your bookshelves and help us give away more books.  Call the office if you would like to donate books or help at the event.

Project READ 2008-09

The family literacy project ended its year with a bang as books were given to all first graders in Cobre and Silver schools and to all of the children at Jose Barrios.  All of the local schools will be designated Title 1 schools next year.  Our challenge will be to provide age appropriate, interesting books for all children to select as their very own. Project READ is one of our literacy projects which will receive funds raised at the Rotary auction in April. Thank you goes to each volunteer who worked and to Linda Ferrara who did an excellent job chairing the event for us.

Good guys are a dime a dozen but an aggressive leader is priceless.

Under the caps and behind the smiles, who are these dedicated LLL board members? While enjoying some of Thelma’s delicious enchiladas with just enough spice to rev your engine before going on to the rest of the May’s board meeting I thought, “What a fun group of people who are very different from one another and yet united under the LLL banner!”  Each is dedicated to increasing literacy and do amazing things to make a difference in our community. Let me introduce them to you:

Frank Ferrara

Frank is our treasurer, keeping the accounts square, doing necessary reports, and setting up budgets and financial goals. He is also our design man, from figuring out the most effective furniture arrangement for the office, study carrels, and tutoring room to designing and building shelves for the storage unit at the library.

Marilyn Berry

Marilyn is one of our tutors for the Tuesday afternoon computer classes. She keeps the minutes for the board meeting and has been our LLL bag lady, heading up the annual Spring Fling Rummage Sale for several years. She works in the LLL office so you probably have met her and enjoyed her gracious manner and friendly smile.

Chrissie Souders

Chrissie teaches school at Stout Elementary and helps to bring the needs of local children to the board’s attention. Rees, board President, is our fearless leader for the second year in a row and he is dedicated to ESL tutoring, including the Monday evening class.

Karen Bryan

Karen is a great reading tutor, very creative and willing to share her phenomenal ideas at in-services with all of us.  Karen and Caroline form our grant committee. Willing to spend hours on the internet looking for grantors eager to help us, they are doing a fantastic job!

Thelma Sordyl

Vice president Thelma motivates the young adults whom she tutors.  She is an avid reader who is contagious! She and Gloria will once again be pairing up during   the 4th of July fiesta in Gough Park so watch out!

Barry Remmel

Barry’s dedication to those who he has tutored has been admirable, not stopping or even slowing down with the going gets rough. Like the other board members, Barry is willing to help any way that he can.

Linda Ferrara

I affectionately refer to Linda as our bookie because she has found publishers and obtained more free books for LLL than anyone else I know.  We have a great selection of books at our annual Love Your Library days due to her emails, efforts and her enthusiasm.

Caroline Baldwin

Project Let’s Read chair Caroline never ceases to amaze me as she persistently pursues books from the National Book Bank with the goal of three books for every school child every year in mind. From researching titles available through enlisting extra help in labeling the books, she is tenacious in reaching LLL’s goal at the 100% level.

Gloria Bradford

Gloria missed our fun at our meeting and Thelma’s delicious enchiladas due to the state track meet and her husband’s coaching.  We didn’t save her any enchiladas but we did miss her! I love to watch people respond to Gloria’s friendly manner at our community outreaches!

Now do you see why I want you to get to know these folks? Serving with them is a pleasure, indeed.
