Let the Good times Roll

We are planning fun times four on November 15th:

  1. READ, PLAY, LEARN

Literacy Link – Leamos will be joining forces with the Public Library and the Grant County Extension Association in sponsoring a fun filled Saturday morning at the Library for all families on National Family Game Day November 15, 2008, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.  All ages will enjoy Pictureka, a game version of finder’s keepers from Hasbro. Libraries across the USA will attempt to set a record for the most people playing a board game at the same time. Crafts and other games will be available to keep the fun rolling as families wait for their turn at Pictureka…and a chance to win a Pictureka game to take home!

  1. CELEBRATE 8 years

What better way to celebrate your 8th birthday than to invite everyone to your house for cupcakes?!  Literacy Link – Leamos is inviting all of our community to join us as we provide cupcakes for all at our National Family Game Day. I don’t know if a dozen dozen may handle it!

  1. KICK OFF FAMILY WEEK

Our county commissioners will issue a proclamation for Nov. 23-29 as National Family Week in Grant County. Our celebration will get the ball rolling. Suggestions for activities by local families will be available throughout the game day.

4. SUCCESS OF “KEYS TO THE AMERICAN DREAM”

The American Dream Starts @ your library” grant funded by Dollar General and administered by the American Library Association has enabled LLL to purchase two laptop computers equipped with software designed to increase speed and ease of acquisition of English, improve English communication skills of reading, writing, and speaking, and increase computer skills.  Bilingual books and materials valued in excess of $1000 have been added to the public collection of the library. Local English language learners help direct the purchase of bilingual materials, books, and software.

All activities are free of charge and will be held in the meeting room of the library. Everyone is welcome!

The American Dream

As we head into the holiday season, we see many reminders to give thanks for the blessings and freedoms we enjoy. Our American dream project has served as a daily reminder of those blessings for me.

Keys to the American Dream has opened the door to the 21st century for *Maria, a first time computer user and English language learner. As one of the learners who gather weekly on Thursday mornings at the public library with two LLL tutors for We Learn English Maria now has the opportunity to gain basic computer skills and computer assisted English instruction.  She is excited by this ‘welcome mat’ to a new place and time which has been rolled out for her.

Keys to the American Dream has melded the strength of two established local literacy sources, the Public Library of Silver City and Literacy Link – Leamos.

Connie* and Angela* are both examples of ways the public is benefiting from the collaboration of the library and the literacy program.

Connie learned of the free tutoring and English language instruction available through Literacy Link – Leamos on her first library visit as a newcomer to our community several years ago.  Since that time, she has taken advantage of every opportunity to improve and practice speaking English.  With a daughter in high school, she knows some about computer basics but now she has the opportunity for a weekly hands-on experience for herself.

After attending We Learn English and hearing about the library’s programs for families, Angela and her son became regulars at the library’s preschool story time . They have increased t their English  skills together while delighting in the lively gathering of children and parents around a book.

I am thankful for the blessing of family and friends .and the freedom to pursue being all I can be. I like to think of it as ‘playing the best hand with what the Dealer has given to me.’ The spirit of teamwork and can do attitude of LLL volunteers is my ‘ace up the sleeve.’

My heartfelt thanks go to each of you and a wish for a fun filled

holiday season.
