Keys to the American Dream Literacy services will be increased to local adult English language learners through Keys to the American Dream, a collaborative project of The Public Library and Literacy Link – Leamos. Learners will be able to effectively strike two keys for achieving the American dream, proficiency in English and adequate computer skills necessary to enter the workforce in the 21st century. LLL is one of 34 grantees nationally to be awarded “The American Dream Starts @ your library” grant, a one-time gift of $5,000 funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and implemented by the American Library Association. From urban areas to rural towns, each library or program demonstrated a need to provide literacy services to adult immigrants and a need to expand resources and services for adult English language learners. Bilingual books and materials will be added to the collection of the Public Library. Laptop computers with ESL software will be purchased for use by LLL learners in weekly English conversational classes. Public libraries have long been a cornerstone of the American dream, providing equal access to information for all.

With Appreciation
We appreciate the financial assistance we receive from our supporters, especially:
Dollar General Target Foundation The New Mexico Coalition for Literacy Bank of America Foundation The Silver City Rotary Club Scholastic Literacy Foundation
With their help we have provided four basic literacy workshops for senior volunteers; 200 books for the immunization clinics; celebrated Dr. Seuss Day with SHS Key Club reading and LLL providing Green Eggs and Ham for the 1st graders at Stout; given 2600 books to families of WIC, El Grito Head Start, and childcare centers and homes since the first of January through Project Read; helped sponsor school assemblies by a children’s author; and provided weekly tutoring and classes in English and keyboarding. The gift of the love of reading and learning goes on and on……Thank you!

Coordinator’s Corner Let’s explore the working definition of LLL.
Literacy Link – Leamos: A community of …A new tutor greeted me a big smile and a “hi, Michelle! We are having so much fun during tutoring.” My reply which interrupted her question of “I don’t know if that’s right…” was, “Well, isn’t that what learning and community is all about?” Learners and volunteers……. 21 adults were helped in our computer and English classes during March and April. 64 volunteers donated hours to LLL and our community. dedicated to increasing literacy .. The hours of tutoring or helping at the rummage sale where we made close to $1000 is definitely impacting lives. Reading and the love …Many volunteers have labeled books in preparation for their distribution while other volunteers have shown the love of reading throughout the school year to all the children in the classes of El Grito Head Start. Everything is more contagious when shown rather than preached. of learning throughout Grant County... Readiness, repetition, and review served with enthusiasm have been the key for success in our recent basic literacy workshops for volunteers of the Grant County Senior Services. Playfully tagged neuralball, learning activities and movements are introduced to promote lifelong learning and fitness with these seniors.
A working definition which is definitely working! Michelle
