Coordinator’s Column Moving Forward in 2008 After sweeping out Christmas, I always follow up with a treasure hunt—looking for all those overlooked decorations tucked in the corners of our home. The surfing Santa amid the seashells can’t hide from me for long! With those treasures safely tucked away, I am ready to look ahead to the New Year and the opportunities it brings. And the first one is…..
READ! Start the Year Right! A community outreach, Everyone in the Castle should Read!, will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the Silver City Food Basket. We will be giving away 200+ wonderful Castle pop up books, designed to encourage families to read books together. This is a great opportunity to let others in our community know about the programs of Literacy Link – Leamos. If you would like to help for an hour or two, call the office or email me.
I appreciate your continued help with LLL projects. I know we will have success in 2008 because we are moving forward together. Michelle

ProLiteracy Training: Basic and Beyond Offered Locally
Basic tutor training is scheduled for two upcoming Fridays, January 18 and Feb 1. Please plan to attend if you are a new tutor or you are not a currently certified ProLiteracy tutor. Experienced tutors may participate in this training which will serve as a refresher course in the basics of tutoring adults and recertification Topics covered during the training include tutoring techniques, lesson planning, establishing goals, and using assessment tools. The days will be full — but very beneficial!
We have a great trainer coming, Geri Monahans, a veteran in the field of literacy and experienced with small town literacy programs. Ms Monahans will provide lots of practical advice, methods, and tips for successful tutoring of adults. All materials for participants will be provided free of charge. Refreshments and lunch will be served both days. Please call the LLL office to register.
Why training? Training increases volunteers’ knowledge and understanding of unique needs of adult learners. Training provides tutors with ways and methods to effectively help learners obtain their goals. A certified tutor is regarded as a “best practice” by grantors of literacy programs. |

Please take one and review its contents. A special thanks to Karen Bryan for writing and organizing much of the contents of the handbook, a very needed and useful tool for our literacy program and all of our volunteers.
