Family Literacy Event: The Bedtime Story Advantage
Literacy Link – Leamos and the Public Library are joining forces to provide a very special open house for families with preschool children.
The Bedtime Story Advantage will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13th, from 5:30 to 7 pm in the upper level and children’s area of the library.
The purpose of this family literacy event is to encourage families to read together daily, beginning at birth. Research shows the significance of early literacy practices in the development of vocabulary and reading abilities and their impact which extends beyond ‘just being ready to start school.’
Parent Talks will be given to parents based on children’s age by LLL volunteers, utilizing a script and research from the Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library. Go to www.ala.org/everychild for additional information
At 5:40 Jonathan Evans will present findings of recent research concerning reading to Early Talkers, birth to 2 years old. Karen Bryan will follow with a presentation to parents of Talkers, the 2 and 3 years olds, and Chrissie Souders will present information and activities to parents of Pre-Readers, 4 and 5’s.
A door prize will be presented following each Parent Talk.

Keep a poem in your pocket And a picture in your head And you’ll never feel lonely At night when you’re in bed. Beatrice Schenk de Regniers
While parents are engaged in the parent talks, library staff and volunteers will be reading stories and doing crafts with children 3 and up. A puppet show is also scheduled during the evening.
Families will enjoy nutritional snacks provided by April Teague of the Grant County Extension service. Each family will be sent home with a bag of goodies, including a copy of Thomas the Tank.
What can you do to help? Invite families with preschool children to attend the event! Volunteer to help during the event. We never know if we will have 10 or 100 people so extra hands on deck are really important!
Six Skills Needed to Benefit From Reading Instruction

Coordinator’s Column The view from my corner office
As Literacy Link – Leamos begins its 8th year, the view from my corner office includes……
A Growing Community of Learners and Volunteers
Putting the heart of our program in a nutshell isn’t easy but the descriptive statement adopted by the LLL board in July 2006 does a pretty good job of it “…a community of learners and volunteers dedicated to promoting literacy, learning, and the love of reading throughout Grant County.”
Our primary vehicle for accomplishing this passion is one-to-one tutoring. 23 learners and 21 tutors have studied together during our current program year. They range in age from 6 to 60+ and have been tackling subjects such as math, English, reading, computer skills, and test taking study skills.
22 learners have benefited from the three computer keyboarding and two English conversational classes which are currently meeting each week. Learning is optimal as the learner to tutor ratio is maintained at 3:1, providing participants with the benefits of peer support and activities yet not compromising individualized instruction and attention, principles of our tutoring program since its inception.
And the beat goes on….

Active Board of Directors
It is always a pleasure for me to introduce our board of directors, for I feel fortunate to work with such a diverse group of dedicated volunteers serving at the helm of our literacy program. The current board members are from a variety of professional and occupational backgrounds; six board members are Silver City natives or have resided in Silver City for 25 years or more; seven board members are or have been active tutors; and all have participated in community outreaches during this past year. This is a wonderful group of people for me to work with—no wonder I love to introduce them!
Board officers this year are Rees Madsen, president, Thelma Sordyl, vice-president, and Frank Ferrara, secretary/treasurer. Also serving on the board of directors are: Caroline Baldwin, Karen Bryan. Marilyn Berry, Gloria Bradford, Michelle Detterick, Linda Ferrara, Jon George, Frank Kenney, Barry Remmel, and Chrissie Souders. Special thanks goes to Karen as she completes 2 years of serving as president of the board, providing leadership in many ways, including the writing of board and volunteer handbooks.
I really can’t say enough about our board of directors….
Bonnie and staff
From housing our program to relaying messages and referring potential LLL volunteers and learners, the library staff continues to provide invaluable support for our program. Thank you! And considering our corner of the quiet workroom is often a beehive of activity…..

Project Read
Many of the 35 LLL press releases printed last year revealed the success of Project Read 2006-07 which placed 12,340 books in the homes of local families and brought the grand total for the past seven years to over 50,000 books.
What’s behind this wonderful project of “giving kids books of their very own?” Take one dynamo of a chairperson Caroline Baldwin, add a hard working grant committee, throw in some support from those who never miss a note or a beat when it comes to singing and stickering books, hands-on help from lots of volunteers, and generous donations from Target and others, including the Bowens of Silver City RV and Self-Storage, and the sky’s the limit.
Project Read 2007-2008 has already given away 6036 books including the 1232 of our spooktacular blitz to the 737 kindergarteners and first graders in Grant County.
No wonder this project always brings lots of smiles….
New Mexico Coalition for Literacy
From my vantage point I recognize the significant role played by the Coalition in our beehive of an office. Their support and funding provides the necessities: office staffing; materials and training for tutors, staff, and board; and help with program development. The increased office hours and assistance by Marilyn benefits our program immensely. You may say ‘they keep us humming’…. and me whistling!
Thanks for making my view all that it is! Michelle
