Coordinator’s Column
Ah, summer in New Mexico…you know it’s arrived when we are pleasantly surprised by days that begin with gorgeous blue skies, cool dawns, noontime heat, and afternoon skies dotted with gorgeous clouds that actually may produce rain! Inevitably we need some wind to come up and get those clouds moving together. Things are on the move at Literacy Link – Leamos, too but they are not wind-powered. They are volunteer-energized!
Some of the impact you as an integral part of Literacy Link – Leamos are having on our community are highly visible, i.e. the 13,508 books given to local children and families through Project Read 2006-07. Words of appreciation that we have received include: I love my books, especially my Dora book… My sister liked them too…. The pages were funny!.... The books you gave me were cool and asome… and I chose Stone Fox. I will love reading this book this summer. Stop by the office and be refreshed by uplifting notes of thanks.
Significant impacts of our program however remain in the shadow of the quiet realm, not as easily seen but nonetheless very important and what we are all about*. Learners are ready for the next level in the Challenger reading series. Barriers to speaking English have been reduced and English skills increased. A tutor is told, “Thank you for teaching me English.” A shout of hurray echoes in the realm of the quiet…Thank you! Together we are making a difference in our world.

LifeShifters 19th Annual Meeting of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy
Reminders from keynote speaker Peter Waite, executive director of ProLiteracy America include: Students don’t really care about reading—it’s what you can do with it; students are motivated by: #1 the need to feel better about themselves; and #2 to increase their daily life skills; and in the cruise ship of life remember to unfold your deck chair and place it front and center, that is be prepared and know where you’re going!
Congratulations to the Deming Literacy Program and Marisol Perez, recipients of the NMCL 2007 Program of the Year. They are making a big difference in literacy students in Deming and Columbus. Way to go!
Puppet Show Sponsored
The dragons are back! The Rotary Literacy Center, a project of Literacy Link – Leamos, will once again sponsor a performance of puppeteer, Markie Scholz, on July 3 at 4 pm at the Silver Recreational Center. This second performance of A Dragon Mystery: Legend of Istaban’s Gold allows an additional 130 local children to experience the thrill of live theatre starring puppets. The morning show is at The Public Library as part of the Summer Reading Program. |

Book distributions are completed! Elementary school students selected 5,583 books this spring to have as their very own. Thanks to the generous gift from the Target foundation and local contributions a good selection of books will be going home with local students as they enjoy their summer vacation. Head Start children have tucked three books in their backpacks throughout the past school year, given to them by our VIP classroom readers: Barb Nelson, Lani Dombrowski, Cheryl Leidich, Linda Richter, and Bruce McKinney. WIC participants and young children in childcare homes and centers have received wonderful board books, durable for handling by little hands. Project Read is impacting our whole community! A big THANK YOU to dedicated project chair Caroline Baldwin for spearheading this literacy outreach and to each volunteer who has labeled, delivered, and distributed books this year. Yearly total: 13, 508 books. |
Free to Read, Free to Grow
The Fiesta at Gough Park is the heart of our local celebration of Independence Day. Activities begin with the Kiwanis’ cowboy breakfast, followed by the parade, dog show, and many other activities. Literacy Link – Leamos will host a booth from 8 am to 2 pm, distributing free books and LL-L program materials. What an excellent way to let our WHOLE community know that free tutoring help is available at The Public Library. We are looking for volunteers to work at our booth for one or two hours. Call the LL-L office today to volunteer!
Project Mystery: Solved
A fun filled evening is guaranteed as children and families are challenged to taste the unknown and identify mystery ingredients of a variety of foods at the July 5th Family Night at the Public Library. Lots of activities will be available for children and families from 5:30 to 7 pm including the selection of one free book from Project Read 2007-08. Can you think of a game or way to enrich this evening’s book selection from our coffers? Your input is needed!

Leaving the House of Tears a memoir by Marten Griego, a spokesman for adult literacy and former student of Read West Literacy program in Rio Rancho, is available for check out from the shelves of our LL-L library. It is a testimony of Marten’s journey through many obstacles in the achievement of clarity of mind and the ability to express the depths of his soul. This memoir is an honest accounting of his pain and his joy. |
Literacy Partners
All of us at Literacy Link – Leamos sincerely appreciate the support and financial assistance of two very special literacy partners, the Silver City Rotary Club and the Dollar General Foundation. Sponsorship of the afternoon puppet show is just one example of an event of the Rotary Literacy Center, a three year old project of Literacy Link – Leamos funded by the Silver City Rotary Club. Literacy Link - Leamos is one of 7 local nonprofits to benefit from the hard work and dedication of the Rotary Club and funds raised at the 2007 Rotary Silent Auction. The Rotary Literacy Center project has provided tutoring and studying areas within the Public Library, computer assisted tutoring, and a variety of community events. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded a generous grant to our program in recognition of the important role we serve in improving literacy in our community. Dollar General’s commitment to literacy began with J.L. Turner, co-founder of Dollar General. With only a third grade education, J.L. overcame tremendous odds and built the company now known as Dollar General Corporation. Great Readers Make Great Leaders - principle revealed by Dollar General’s commitment to literacy. Dollar General company mission is simply to serve others. |
