How wonderful it is to be around so many life shifters!  I love the term and am anxious to attend the NMCL annual meeting and learn more about its origin.

We are a group of life shifters in high gear! Some of our activity is high profile and other more discreet but all is paying off big time for our community.  Together we are making a….

Come prepared to have fun, as the only thing typical about this reception is that ‘refreshments will be served’.  Learners and community literacy partners will be joining us to express their appreciation, too. See you then!          ~  Michelle

Now is the time….

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

2007 NMCL Annual Meeting:

 Life Shifters

All life shifters are invited to attend the annual statewide literacy meeting of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy on June 15 in Socorro. Who are life shifters? Those of us who change our own lives and those of others by teaching reading or English and learners who step up, receive help, and move forward. Life Shifters ride the wind of change, growing from the trip. All volunteers and learners are invited to attend the relevant, interactive workshops.

Peter Waite, executive director for ProLiteracy America and keynote speaker, will be joining us for the day and available for questions, concerns, and general discussion at the roundtable. Additional information is available at www.nmcl.org.

Get ready to be inspired, have fun, and get acquainted with other programs.

And shift, we must, because the jobs and new careers are on their way, and we need to prepare.”

  Rena Paradis, Executive Director

Project Read 2006 -2007

“Look! My book says Target!” is just one comment overheard during the book distribution at Hurley Elementary School.  It was explained to the young boy and his friends that they were able to have a great choice of books because of the generous people at Target and the hard work of volunteers of Literacy Link -Leamos. What great partners!

Literacy Link – Leamos received a generous grant of $5000 from the Target Foundation to fund Project Read 2006-2007. The goal of the project, to impact local literacy by increasing ownership and access to books for families, has been met. Before the end of the school year, 6780 books will be selected by local children in elementary schools and in childcare homes and centers. Project Read 2006-2007 has provided 12,340 books to families throughout Grant County.

A high five and a huge thank you go to:  Project chair Caroline Baldwin; distribution assistants Bob Cwik and Rees Madsen; Preschool assistants Barb Nelson and Lani Dombrowski; and each Project Read volunteer who labeled, boxed, and distributed the books.  You are the heart and soul of Project Read!

I've got Mine!

LL-L Board of Directors

Books, fundraising, workforce needs, tutoring, literacy partnerships, and publicity are just a few ways board members have been busy this spring. Each activity is essential as we strive to fulfill our mission to improve local literacy and help individual meet specific goals. Thank you!

A hearty welcome is extended to new 2007 board members, Chrissie Souders who joined us in January and our April recruit Gloria Bradford.  Both are Silver City natives and are involved with many different community activities and groups, from Girl Scouts to Senior Citizens.  We appreciate their willingness to serve on the board and look forward to their unique perspectives as we endeavor to increase our impact on our community and its literacy needs.

Also serving on our 2006-07 board of directors are  Karen Bryan, Frank Ferrara, Barry Remmel, Linda Ferrara, Frank Kinney, Thelma Sordyl, Marilyn Berry,  Jon George, Caroline Baldwin, and Rees Madsen   We appreciate their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication.

And moving on….

A big THANK YOU goes to the following LL-L Board members who are relocating: Betsie Brinkley, grants, tutoring, FOL liaison; Jennifer Perez,  special events, Head Start liaison, workshops; Sue Silverthorn:  tutoring and publicity.

Thank you for your dedication and unique contributions.  We will miss you! We bid you farewell with the words of Roy Rogers, “Until we meet again, may the good Lord take a liking to you.”

Rotary Learning Center

The use of the study carrels and computers of the RLC have increased dramatically by tutors and library patrons.  Tutors are encouraged to use the newly installed cord at the entrance to the carrels.  This will limit distractions and insure maximum privacy for tutoring sessions.  A schedule for the carrel space is posted in the LL-L office.

Remember to sign up at the HELP desk of the library for use of the small conference room. Please notify the LL-L office of all changes in scheduled tutoring sessions.  This is helpful in eliminating overbooking of space and computers.
