Coordinator’s Column
This new year of 2007 has taken off like an anxious pony express rider leaving Dodge heading west, kicking up dust in all sorts of directions!
January’s Read! Start the Year Right! campaign was very successful and set the pace for an excellent Love Your Library Day in February. Event chair Annette Mitchem kept everything finely tuned for “Fit as a Fiddle,” our 6th annual family literacy event with attendance over 200.
The Monday evening English class has expanded from one to two hours each week at the request of its learners. Laptops and software are increasingly used by tutors and learners. A keyboarding class now meets on Tuesday afternoons.
Tutors, let me know if your learner would like laptop time in addition to tutoring sessions and we will see what we can arrange. The study carrels of the Rotary Literacy Center are busy, especially late afternoons. My hands are not the only ones on the reins. Thanks for your help!
May the spring wind be at your back and all tumbleweeds cleared from your path. Michelle

Rotary Auction
The biannual silent auction of the Silver City Rotary Club will be held on Saturday March 10, at 5 pm at WNMU. Proceeds will be given to 7 not-for-profit organizations including Literacy Link – Leamos.
The proceeds of the 2005 auction financed our Rotary Literacy Center project which included the construction and furnishing of three tutoring carrels and the refurbishing of the tutoring room in the Public Library. These areas are increasingly busy with LL-L tutors and learners using them during weekly tutoring sessions. The public is invited to attend. For more information call the LL-L office or Ray Davis at 538-3777.
Recognition of Success
Daniel Watkins successfully completed Laubach Reading Level 2. Next, the Challenger Reading series! Tutor Bob Cwik credits Daniel’s success to his diligence and commitment to his tutoring sessions. Congratulations, Daniel, and keep up the hard work!

Special Thanks Let the FUN begin! 6,997 books purchased from First Book have arrived and are ready to be labeled and distributed to local children. Labeling is scheduled on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout March from 1 to 3 pm at Silver City Self Storage, located at 13th and Bennett Street. All sessions are on a weather permitting basis so contact Project Read chair Caroline Baldwin (388-8771) to confirm any session. Your help is appreciated. Project Read, funded in part by the Target Foundation, has scheduled six school distributions for April. Contact the LL-L office if you would like to help with them. Fun is guaranteed!
Tutors, Take Note
The use of the laptops and study carrels of the Rotary Literacy Center have increased to the point that we need to begin scheduling their use. Please reserve space for weekly tutoring sessions and laptops in the LL-L office. The tutoring room will continue to be reserved at the Help desk. |
Volunteer Fest 2007 Inspire by Example
The first annual Volunteer Fest sponsored by the Volunteer Center and the CASA program is scheduled for April 14 from 10 am to 2 pm at Gough Park. This event will give us the opportunity to inform the general public about our program and our fantastic volunteers.
Sponsors will provide free food, live music, and kids’ activities for the public. This is a great way to spotlight one of our community’s greatest assets, volunteers. Plan to stop by the LL-L table during the Fest and share your experience with potential tutors and volunteers. Your involvement inspires others to serve as revealed in the words of Woodrow Wilson:
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.
Reading Strategies
Good readers use phonics/decoding, prediction and inference, questions, clarification, and summarization to increase their comprehension. These are important skills for all readers of all ages. To begin with phonics, look carefully at the word. Look for word parts you know and think about the sounds of the letters. More tips available from the LL-L office! |
Annual Spring Fling
Our annual It’s Spring-so Fling rummage sale, in conjunction with the Celebration of Spring at the Big Ditch Park, is scheduled for April 28th this year. The parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce on Hudson Street is our location for this fundraiser. Details will be forthcoming in April but NOW is the time to start cleaning your cupboards, closets, and garages now!
