Coordinator’s Column The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ~Eleanor Roosevelt As we prepare to celebrate the 6th anniversary of Literacy Link – Leamos, I am delighted to be a part of a group of people who believe in their dreams and are willing to work to see those dreams materialize. The heart of our program continues to draw strength from the dreams of its founders as revealed in an email I recently received from a tutor.... “We have built a bond … last week after missing our date we both showed up with a small gift for each other, which I think shows our commitment. I have made some steps in meeting her needs and not so much my own agenda….It finally became apparent to me that she likes to be in charge...she reads best when she holds the book, manipulates the flashcards, and when we incorporate some art into the lesson…in the last three weeks I have seen K blossom…it is a pleasure tutoring her.” Come celebrate with us as our learners and volunteers are honored for their accomplishments. Enjoy a brief look back and forward as “Empowered by our Past, Preparing for our Future” is presented. See you on November 3rd! Michelle LL-L Board of Directors Literacy Link – Leamos is fortunate to have a board that is a dedicated team working together to meet the literacy needs of our community. Project Read 2006 -2007 Literacy Link – Leamos has received a generous grant of $5000 from the Target Foundation to fund Project Read 2006-2007. The goal of the project is to positively impact literacy in our community by increasing ownership and access to books for families. The objectives of Project Read include obtaining quality books for children so that every local child from a needy family is able to select three free books ‘as their very own.’ The generous grant from Target enables us to purchase books however; your help is needed in the preparation and distribution of the books. A label identifying the book as a gift from Literacy Link – Leamos and funded by Target is placed in each book. The labels also provide information on tutoring available through our literacy program and contact information. Labeling sessions will begin in January and specifics will be posted on our website and in the office. All project volunteers will be notified by email. Volunteer today by calling the office or contact project chair Caroline Baldwin, 388-8771. Get involved with this project. The delight of the children picking out their books is something to be savored! We appreciate the hard work of our grant committee: Betsie Brinkley, Caroline Baldwin, and Karen Bryan. Thanks for doing a great job!

Rotary Literacy Center A Few FAQs How do I reserve the tutoring room? Sign up at the Help Desk by speaking with the library staff. Where are the laptops and how may I access them? The laptops are in the locked cupboards of the RLC study carrels and complete instructions are posted in the LL-L office. Do I need to reserve use of the laptops in advance? Typically there is a laptop available for use in the library but you may also reserve one by contacting the office. Tutor may use them to plan lessons and increase computer skills. Tutors’ In-Service Websites Tutor Robin Hines has found enchantedlearning.com useful in tutoring her learner. Check it out! It has a lot of free teaching tools available. LL-L will soon have membership status on this site for use by its tutors. Do you have a favorite site to recommend? We’d love to hear from you!

Tutors’ Corner
Let’s review some of the characteristics of an adult learner. An adult’s mind has developed thus he can reason and judge. An adult learns best by association. An adult has a larger speaking vocabulary than a child and understands the meaning of many spoken words. When learning to read he needs to find a way to connect the written word with the spoken word. An adult has more experience than a child and likes to read about things which relate to his experience or which will give him a new experience. An adult is usually independent, assuming responsibility for him or herself. An adult likes to teach himself as much as possible. An adult should see the relation of what he is learning to the problems and tasks he faces. An adult usually has developed self-respect and the tutor must be careful to maintain the self-respect of a learner. The learner should not be criticized or embarrassed in any way.
