Ah, summertime and signs of the joy of living! Just a few that I’ve been delighted by: happy sounds from the 362 children involved with the activities of the Summer Reading Program; visits from pairs of quail; smiles of learners and tutors using the RLC tutoring carrels; the ‘bienvenidos’ of colorful hollyhocks along sidewalks;bookshelves filling up with new books; and blooming century plants, nature’s exclamation mark of summer’s joie de vivre in the Southwest. Don’t miss the trio of century plants at the entrance to Gila Regional or the beauty on Santa Rita Street.
May you experience joie de vivre this summer and remember, joy increases when it is shared!

Community outreach: Reading Takes You to New Heights
The Fiesta at Gough Park is the heart of our local celebration of Independence Day. Activities begin with the Kiwanis’ cowboy breakfast, followed by the parade, dog show, and many other activities. Literacy Link – Leamos will host a booth from 8 am to 2 pm, distributing free books and LL-L program materials. What an excellent way to let our WHOLE community know that free tutoring help is available at The Public Library. Project chair Thelma Sordyl, 538-9412, is looking for volunteers to work at our booth for one or two hours. Call her or the LL-L office today to volunteer!
GIVE: Volunteers needed to work at booth during 4th of July Fiesta.

Project Let’s Read: In Their Own Words
Project Let’s Read 2005-06, funded by the Target Foundation and accomplished by LL-L volunteers, placed 14, 342 books in the hands and homes of local children.
The message from many students including Alexis was simple, loud, and clear: Thank you for the books. I will read them over the summer.
Others had a unique twist….From first graders Gregory: Thank you….I will give you something very special-I will read all summer; from Kamryn: Thank you for the books. I promise I will read them every summer. I love them. There the best. You write good stories; Joe plans to share the wealth: Thank you for the books. When my brother is old a nuf to read, I will give him the books. From Kaitlyn: Dear Literacy Link, Thank you for the books. They make us learn the wrds. And they make us go to hiur levl!
From Fifth graders Christina: Thank you….I think it was very thoughtful of you to send us animal books because we can learn a lot about different animals. I think it was very thoughtful for you to give us books of gadgets because it will keep the boys busy. According to Matt the book on gadgets will do just that: Thank u for sending the book. I like the World’s Weirdest Gadgets because there are cool stuff.
The artwork which accompanied many of the cards is priceless! Stop by the office and enjoy them. And THANK YOU!
What I like in a good author is not what he says, but what he whispers. L.P. Smith

Literacy Link – Leamos was represented at the 2006 annual meeting and conference of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy by board members Jennifer Perez and Thelma Sordyl and Program Coordinator Michelle Detterick. The conference gave attendees an opportunity to become acquainted with literacy programs, directors, tutors, and students from the 90 volunteer literacy organizations statewide. Keynote speakers honored the 20 years of service by the NMCL, discussed current concerns, and looked to literacy needs of the future. NMCL co-founder Janet Green recounted the formation of the NMCL in 1986, the initiative of first lady Kathy Carruthers. Outgoing NMCL board president Harry Pearson reported on activities of the 27 programs receiving NMCL funds this past year. Dr. Carruthers reminded us that we are “doing the Lord’s work” and impacting the future, as individual lives are changed by concerned tutors. Practical workshops on various topics concluded the day. Some of the fun activities and nuggets gleaned from the workshops will be shared at July’s in-service for LL-L volunteers.
