Coordinator’s
Column I was privileged to be a part of the 2005 ProLiteracy World Wide
Conference held this past week in Tucson, an inspiring gathering of 800
tutors, learners, board members, program directors, trainers, and staff. I
have a pocketful of ‘take- aways’ from the conference which I will be
sharing with you in the months ahead.
One sound bite which is still resonating in my soul is a definition
of a passionate person as “one who knows that in every single person one
meets today, there is a match waiting to be lit.” As we look forward to the celebration of our 5th
anniversary, I am reminded of an ancient saying of the Hopi shared during
an introduction to a keynote speaker: Work
hard, keep ceremonies, live peaceably, and unite hearts. Golden
Leaves of Literacy 2005 brings to mind our many friends and the hard
work of those who laid the foundation of Literacy Link –Leamos.
We extend to them a special invitation to our ceremony.
Some of our founders are found among our most active volunteers in the
program today. Others have moved to new locations and involvements, their lives taking a turn of direction. Take a leisurely walk through the library and you will see hearts
continue to unite in the
desire to help individuals reach goals, learn to read, and bridge language
barriers. Pause and see a
book placed in the hand of a child, the glow of understanding lighting up
a face. I hope to see you on Nov. 18th.
Michelle Detterick Conference Takeaway # 1 Reading is best learned when taught in a content area. Include elements of document and quantitative literacy during tutoring sessions for all learners. |

Project
Update: Rotary
Literacy Center
Project chair Nancy Sullivan, her assistant Frank Ferrara, and committee members have diligently researched, thoroughly planned, and have ordered furnishings, computers, and software for the newly designated Rotary Literacy Center in the Library. With materials due in this month you will immediately notice the changes in the tutoring room and the area by the large windows of the west wall. A grand opening is not far away! During October’s in-service, Nancy demonstrated a Reading Pen, a device which will read aloud text when scanned and will be particularly beneficial to emergent readers and ESL learners. Our Rotary Literacy Center project was one of the sponsors of two very successful events held during October: the Teen Scrabble Challenge and the high-energy literacy outreach at the Red Hot Children’s Fiesta. Tutors’ In-Service Lasting
Impressions Date: November 10,
2005 Time:
9 a.m. to 12 noon We
are privileged to hear Mr. Gilbert Zamora whose message is certain to make
a Lasting Impression
on everyone who hears it. Mr. Zamora lived for years with a huge secret-he
could not read. As a
maintenance supervisor with the Alamogordo school system, he had learned a
variety of coping mechanisms to cover up this deficit.
Even his daughter did not realize that her Dad could not read.
She thought he was just not interested in helping her with school
assignments! Don’t
miss this wonderful opportunity to hear an inspiring speaker. Please
register for this event presented by the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy
and New Mexico State Library at

Project
Let’s Read We have received a generous grant from Target which will fund Project: Let’s Read 2005-2006. Thank you, Target! Once again our goal will be to allow each needy child to select three free books ‘as their very own.’ The delight of the children picking out their books is something to be savored! Plan now to help with our book distributions this spring. We appreciate the hard work of our grant committee: Betsie Brinkley, Caroline Baldwin, and Karen Bryan.
