Coordinator’s
Column Busy in June with adding up numbers from our 2004-05 program year and writing reports and proposals, I took a break and called Grandma Lou, a local childcare provider, and asked if we could give books to children in her care. The 25 children that she cares for during any given week are infants through about ten years old so a variety of books would be needed. The next morning I arrived with three books for each child in tow. Grandma Lou, her helper, about 12 busy preschoolers, and one very happy baby greeted me, as they were playing in the fenced front yard of the home, enjoying the early summer morning. After visiting for a few minutes with Grandma and Tia…we were on a first-name basis by then… Grandma announced to the children that I had some books for each of them and asked if they would like to see them. Balls, sand shovels and buckets, riding toys were quickly abandoned, as the children gathered around a picnic table and were shown the books that they would be taking home with them that afternoon. A Clifford, the big red dog, book was chosen as the read aloud book for that morning. I’m quite sure that even a Kodak would not have captured the real thrill of the moment. Michelle Detterick |
Quote
of the Month Why books in homes are vital for a literate society….
U.S. Dept. of Education, What Works
During the 2004-2005 school year 7,086 free books were given to local children. A one-time grant from the McCune Charitable Foundation and donations from local LL-L supporters enabled us to meet the goal of giving three books to every child of needy families. In cooperation with local preschools, childcare homes and centers, the WIC program, Head Start, and elementary schools we have “put books in a child’s hands” and significantly increased the access to good books in many homes. A BIG thank you goes to the many volunteers who were involved with this important LL-L project by labeling, packing, and delivering books. It couldn’t happen without your help. Thank you! And now for a peek at Project Let’s Read 2005-06…. Our goal remains the same, 3 books for each needy child. The cost hasn’t changed, $.25 per book from the National First Book Bank. The grant committee is currently seeking funding to continue this project. We appreciate all donations! |

Special
Thanks Special thanks to HEAD START READERS …Lani Dombrowski, Cheryl Leidich, Barb Nelson, Linda Richter, and Bruce McKinney who faithfully read to every Head Start child in every classroom during the 2004-05 school year. A big Thank You to Barb for organizing it all. Plans are underway for the new school year. If you are interested in volunteering for this project please call the LL-L office. Successful
Year Success is measured one learner at a time, progressing toward their goals. Our program documented the progress of 79 learners advancing towards their goals, helped by 37 tutors during 1,065 hours of collaborative tutoring. In addition LL-L volunteers contributed 1,898 hours to our program by reading to Head Start children, working on grants, distributing books, collaborating with community literacy partners, publicity, and a variety of other ‘behind the scene’ activities. Thank you for your diligence and dedication as a volunteer! We couldn’t do it without YOU! International
Literacy Day Thursday,
September 8, 2005, will mark the 38th annual observance of
International Literacy Day. Governor
Richardson has issued a proclamation declaring the day in New Mexico |
and has encouraged mayors to declare International Literacy Day in local communities as well. LL-L’s celebration of the day will include a reception during our English conversational class and a community outreach booth at Wal-mart. Please plan to enjoy our reception from 11 am to 12 pm in the meeting room of the Public Library. Our outreach at Wal-Mart is scheduled from 1 to 5 pm. Volunteers are needed to man the booth. Please call the office if you are able to help at this community outreach. Rotary
Literacy Center The newest project of Literacy Link – Leamos is the Rotary Literacy Center, funded by a generous one-time gift of $16,827 by the Silver City Rotary Club. This gift will enable us to increase and furnish additional tutoring space in the library, acquire materials and computers for use by tutors and learners, and sponsor community literacy events. Plans for the designated space in the library are underway. The inaugural event sponsored by the RLC was an afternoon performance of Quest for the Junkyard Dragon by Markie Scholtz, a professional puppeteer. The morning performance was sponsored by the Summer Reading Program of the Public Library. This second performance allowed an additional 130 children and their parents to enjoy amusing entertainment by life-size puppets.
